Traffic Down but Rankings Stable? AI Overviews
It is the most common complaint we hear this year: "I am still number three for my main keyword, and my traffic is down by a third." The rank tracker says nothing happened. Analytics says a lot happened. Both are telling the truth, and the usual culprit is an AI Overviews traffic drop.
What changed is not your position. It is the page around your position. When Google shows an AI Overview at the top of the results, many searchers get their answer without scrolling to the organic links. Ahrefs measured this across 300,000 keywords: with an AI Overview present, the top-ranking page now gets a 58% lower click-through rate than on comparable keywords without one, up from 34.5% a year earlier. You can keep your ranking and still lose the click.
Here is how to confirm that is what happened to you, and what to do about it.
The signature of an AI Overviews traffic drop
A traffic drop caused by AI Overviews looks different from a ranking drop. Check for this pattern:
- Average position is flat or even better. Your rank tracker and Search Console agree that you did not fall.
- Impressions are flat or up. Google is still showing your page as often as before.
- Clicks are down, so click-through rate is down. The same number of people see you, fewer of them visit.
- The losses cluster on informational queries. "What is", "how to", "why does" and definition-style searches get hit hardest, because those are the questions an AI summary can answer on the spot.
If positions fell too, you have a different problem, and our guide on why rankings drop is the better starting point. If positions held and CTR fell, keep reading.
How to confirm it in Search Console
You do not need a paid tool for the first pass. Google Search Console has everything.
- Open Performance, then Search results, and compare two periods. Pick the four weeks before your traffic fell and the four weeks after, side by side.
- Switch to the Queries tab and sort by click difference. The queries that lost the most clicks are your suspects.
- Look at position and impressions for those queries. Stable position plus stable impressions plus falling clicks is the AI Overview fingerprint.
- Open the Generative AI report. Since August 2026, Search Console has a Generative AI performance report for every site. It shows how often links to your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. If the pages that lost clicks show up there, you have strong evidence.
- Search the top suspects yourself. Use a private window, set to the country you target, and look at what sits above the organic results.
One limit to know: the Generative AI report counts impressions only. It has no queries, clicks or positions. So it tells you which pages AI features show, and your query data tells you where clicks fell. You need both.
Rule out the boring causes first
Before blaming AI, make sure the drop is not something simpler that produces the same shape:
- Seasonality. Compare with the same period last year, not just the previous month.
- Broken analytics. A consent banner change or a missing tag can make traffic "fall" in analytics while Search Console clicks are fine. Always trust Search Console clicks over analytics sessions for this question.
- One page, not the site. If a single URL accounts for most of the loss, check that page for a title change, a stronger competitor, or a featured snippet you lost.
What to do about an AI Overviews traffic drop
You cannot switch AI Overviews off, and rewriting everything in a panic will not bring the clicks back. What works is shifting where you spend effort.
Sort your keywords by what the click is worth now
Split your tracked keywords into two groups:
- Answerable queries. Definitions, quick facts, simple how-tos. An AI summary can satisfy most of these searchers. Expect lower CTR permanently and value these pages for visibility and citations, not raw traffic.
- Queries that still need a visit. Comparisons, tools, templates, pricing, local services, anything the searcher has to act on. These keep their clicks far better. This is where new content and link building should go.
Make your page the one the AI Overview cites
AI Overviews link to their sources, and being one of them is the new top spot for answerable queries. Ranking helps but is not the whole story: Ahrefs found that 38% of AI Overview citations come from the top 10 for that exact keyword, and about 69% from the top 100. The rest come from pages ranking for related questions, because Google expands each search into several sub-queries before writing the answer.
So the pages that get cited tend to:
- Answer the question directly in the first two or three sentences, then expand
- Use clear headings that match how people phrase the question
- State facts plainly, with numbers, dates and named sources
- Rank for the main query and the related questions around it, not a single keyword
Measure what you can still win
A report that only shows positions will keep telling you everything is fine while revenue falls. Put rankings next to real clicks, and weight each keyword by how many clicks the results page can realistically send. We cover the full scorecard in is rank tracking dead?
Frequently asked questions
Do AI Overviews lower your rankings?
No. An AI Overview sits above the organic results; it does not change your position. It lowers the number of people who scroll down and click, so traffic falls while rankings hold.
How do I know if a keyword triggers an AI Overview?
Search it in a private window set to your target country. For a site-wide view, the Generative AI report in Search Console lists which of your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, though not for which queries.
Will the lost traffic come back?
Rarely on its own. Clicks on answerable queries tend to stay lower. Recover the value by getting cited in the AI Overview and by shifting effort toward queries where searchers still need to visit a site.
How SEOWren helps
SEOWren tracks your keyword positions daily and, once you connect Google Search Console, puts real clicks and impressions next to those positions on the same project. That is exactly the comparison you need to tell "we fell" from "the page changed around us."
Our share of voice estimate also accounts for what else is on the results page. A keyword where an AI Overview sits above you counts for fewer expected clicks than the same position on a clean page, so your visibility number does not overstate what your rankings are worth.
You also get alerts when a keyword moves, and competitor tracking to see who is taking the positions around yours. We cover how to use all of this as a baseline for AI search in how to track AI search visibility.
